Memory. How does it work? It never seems linear, but rather a jumble of images & other data that we sort & untangle to write stories, explain events, justify errors, inflate achievements, etc.

Project 68 is an on-going series of texts and other stuff from underground newspapers in the US & Europe published this week fifty years ago.

1968 turned the world around. HERE WE ARE, A HALF CENTURY LATER: STILL SPINNING THE SAME YARNS. Are we better off? Worse off? Or just pissed off? You be the judge.

Texts taken verbatim from OCR of actual pages of underground newspapers. The sometimes quirky results of the OCR readings invite musings and interpretations.

Hot Line to the Electorate
It is conceivable that even if you could make a case for the American system of democracy by ballot, historically, and say that there was a time when it served a purpose, there would also be a case to be made for the argument that it is now obsolete. Because the time intervals between puttingup with what there is, and staking your liberty or your life on what the law allows—or demands—and the next election, is too long. Things are moving so fast that despotic misrule by government or by individuals and pressure groups, some of them employing illegal and violent means—the intervals of time between one election and the next were never designed for the swiftly-moving events of the Sixties. We can’t wait two years or four years to go to the polls and vote for a change of policies. In a time of rapid social transition the time lapse between elections makes the ballot irrelevant. The ballot became obsolete when the communications media changed from print to electronic communications. It is now possible for a vital issue to be raised today and put up to the electorate tomorrow.

One wanders hew they can be so presumptuous as to demand that students step being concerned about the draft and the war and limit their mental processes to the classroom. They set a very poor example.
