Sicilian sketchbook, no. 2

The night we arrived, our host warned us about Il Lupe. The wolves.

Feral Dogs of Sicily

Untitled_Artwork 35.jpg

The night we arrived
Our host warned us
To keep the gate locked

He got real serious
Stared off into the dark
I lupi he whispered.

Wolves.

I lupi sounded a lot like
Les loups to us so
We assumed he meant

Wolves in the dark, but
How could that be?
On a hillside so close to the sea?

Later, much later we met the wolves
Feral dogs they were, a snarling pack
At the gate when we dared take a walk

Sicily was like that
Serene to look at
But wild at heart
