Midnight at HOME and darkness fills Ellis’s room like wet smoke. Ellis sits erect at his table and turns the pages of the new book he is working on. He calls it The Pilgrimage of The Cowboy Allgood. So far, he has only sketched in some basic stories and designs, mostly based on the book he just finished, The Infant Buddha of Boyle. In The Pilgrimage, Allgood appears as a cowboy wearing a cloak of many colors and a shimmering hat made of rattlesnake skins that sends out halos whenever he turns his head to face the rising of the sun and the setting of the moon. His sidekick, Sonny, is, by nature, rough, practical, and loyal.
After a minute of contemplation, Ellis closes his eyes and relives the moment he met the man who introduced himself as Allgood.
Three hours earlier.
